We have owners would like to install a pellet stoves in their units. There is nothing mentioned in the governing docs, but we have architectural control. The building inspector said they would require approval from the association before issuing a permit. Townhouse residents are nervous about these kind of stoves. Would the recommendation of an engineering inspection in regard to safety be called for?

I would verify with the associations attorney; however, if there are no restrictions or local ordinances prohibiting same there should be no issue as long as the stove is installed properly, there are smoke detectors installed and in working order, and carbon monoxide monitors installed about 10’ away from the stove.  Wood and pellet stoves are regularly installed in wood framed construction (I have a wood stove insert that I use to heat my home which is wood framed).  The stove absolutely needs to be installed by a certified/licensed installer and should professionally install same to ensure safety – they will follow all applicable codes and ensure the chimney venting the appliance is adequate and properly fitted to vent the stove.
